STM Receives National Recognition for Commitment to Empowering Students in STEM

St. Thomas More High School announced today that it has been recognized as a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for the seventh consecutive year.  
 
St. Thomas More is one of just a few hundred high schools across the U.S. to receive this prestigious award, which honors schools that provide broad access to transformative learning experiences in biomedical science and engineering.  
“Each year, PLTW introduces hundreds of our students to the world of biomedical science and engineering,” said Darlene Langhoff, who chairs STM’s PLTW program. “Students learn content and real-world skills that will help them succeed in all areas of their life. We earn this recognition every year because of the wonderful students who take PLTW classes.” 
 
Serving over 12,200 schools nationally, PLTW is a nonprofit organization whose project-based curriculum has been proven to spark students’ interest in STEM while teaching them essential, transferable skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and time management. 
 
The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, St. Thomas More had to meet multiple criteria in the 2022-23 school year, such as:  
  • Enrolling at least 25 percent of students in PLTW, or having at least 33 percent of participating students taking two or more PLTW classes;  
  • Offering three or more PLTW courses;  
  • Implementing strategies to support proportional representation with regard to race, ethnicity, poverty, and gender.  
 
“We are honored to recognize St. Thomas More for their commitment to providing students with exceptional educational experiences while ensuring equitable access to PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. “We congratulate them on this achievement and celebrate their dedication to empowering students with the knowledge and skills to succeed, not only in STEM subjects but also preparing them for future careers and life outside of the classroom.”
