Metro Conference Champions
The senior leadership of the five starters and key subs for the 1976-77 Cavaliers basketball team helped propel them to a 13-3 conference record and a conference championship. Highlights of the season included a last second shot by sophomore Marty Rodriguez that secured a hard fought one-point victory over Marquette as well as a thrilling 57-49 win at St. Catherine’s. These wins were the key victories in a nine-game conference winning streak. Don Stachowiak (1st-Team) and Jeff Schunk (2nd-Team) earned All-Metro Conference honors. The other senior starters were Steve Blaskowski, who, along with Stachowiak and Schunk, was a three-year letterman, as well as Gerry Miller and Dundee Kelbel. Coach Fons attributed the success of the team to “the tremendous work ethic, competitiveness, selflessness, and love of the game and for each other” that the team exhibited all season long.
