Catholic Conference Champions
Coach Haluska earned his final title at the helm, capturing the crown for the fifth time in seven years. Bosco opened up the season with a scoreless tie and were topped by Marquette, 12-5, finishing with a 7-1-1 mark. Quarterback Jeff Barber led this balanced offensive attack which shut out Catholic Memorial, 29-0, and outscored all its foes, 178-52. This was a solid team led by First Team All-State running back Don Sager and linebacker Mark Giorgi. They were joined on the All-Conference team by ends Dave Russell, Mark (Buck) Rogers, and dual-purpose lineman Tom Rozina. These gritty Dons scored first (on a Barber to Russell bomb), but lost the State title to Green Bay Premontre, 36-16. Size was most definitely a factor as Premontre’s line averaged 246 pounds, which was comparable to the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers that year.
