The story of this season centered around Racine St. Catherine’s Jim Chones and their unbeaten season (16-0). Rival Marquette was also supposed to make noise in the State Tournament as they ended up at 15-1. But these Dons weren’t having any of it. Coach Tom Sager’s chargers avenged two early losses to the Hilltoppers, defeating Coach Paul Noack and Allie McGuire’s team in overtime, 69-63. History repeated itself when Gary Sager hit a 25-foot jump shot with two seconds left, tying the contest. At the Milwaukee Panther Arena for the state tournament, the Dons dispatched Stevens Point Pacelli (77-41) and Manitowoc Roncalli (74-44) before losing in overtime to St. Kate’s (59-51). Center Mark Scholz acquitted himself well in all three games against Chones despite the huge disparity in height. Gerry Radomski and Gary Sager garnered Second Team All-Conference nods and Radomski and Gary Glass made the WISAA All-Tournament Team.
