Catholic Conference Champions

STTHOMAS 1013-1The 1955 Dons baseball team were the undefeated conference champions. The combination of great hitting and outstanding pitching led Coach Don Fleming’s crew to a 13-0 conference record. Led by returning veterans Jim Just, Gerry Brozynski, Ludwig Vodnik, Larry Stencel, Jim Marenda, and Larry Schroeder, plus three undefeated pitchers – Ted Brzenk (6-0), Gene Lyskawa (3-0), and Jack Baranowski (3-0) – the Dons enjoyed their finest season. The season was highlighted by two Ted Brzenk no-hitters against Racine St. Catherine’s (4-1) and Catholic Memorial (6-0), and a great come-back in the last inning to beat Catholic Memorial (4-3). The Dons were upset (9-7) by Green Bay Catholic Central in their bid for a state title in the first round game.
