Catholic Conference Champions
The 1954 Football Dons scored a first as they earned sole possession of the championship trophy. Don Fleming held the reins on the squad that registered another first, a win over Marquette (12-0) before a South Stadium mob of 7,000. Ted Brzenk quarter backed the title team with help from All-Conference and All-State James Just and All-Conference Gordon Datka. In addition, the Dons had strong backfield talent, including Ralph Antczak, Gerry Brozynski, and Larry Stencel. The Green Knights of the Gridiron bested Menasha St. Mary’s (45-0), Waukesha Memorial (19-14), Messmer (27-6), Notre Dame (41-0), and Pius XI (26-0).
