AP Studio Artist – Tania Torres (STM ’20)

This semester I decided to create a story. This story is Journey of Car. I used a very illustrative approach, using mostly pen, some bold, some soft colors, and a lot of linework to create different worlds and situations that Car literally “drives” through. I wanted to have fun and be creative with my Sustained investigation this semester. Car was discovered early on in the semester during one of our critiques. I found that I could play with abstract linework and shapes that Car could interact with, developing my illustrative craftsmanship and playing with the positive and negative space of the composition.

Car goes through a variety of problems and my ultimate goal was to show that everyone can go through these problems, have their own story, and eventually reach peace and safety. I was able to use Car as a metaphor to show that anyone can have problems in their life. I went about exploring this idea by thinking of what I like to draw most, which was patterns and line work. This developed the compositions in which Car travels through.
