Team Inductees

1978 Thomas More Cross Country

Conference Champions
State Champions

The 1978 Thomas More cross country team began their season by defeating the defending public school state champion LaCrosse Central and ended it by capturing its sixth straight Metro Conference title and fourth WISAA State championship in the last six years.  In addition to Conference and State, the team also won the Marshfield, Hodag, Highlander, Cavalier, and Angel Invitationals.  In an impressive showing at the State meet, all seven runners finished under 17 minutes, with sophomore Dave Kaluzny (5th), senior captain Rich Sowlles (7th), senior Jeff Kennedy (9th), senior captain Steve Hessil (11th), and senior Duane Beczkiewicz (17th) earning spots in the top 20.  Aside from a two-week stretch where illness affected a significant portion of the team, it was a truly dominant season for the Cavaliers.

1979 Thomas More Wrestling

Conference Champions

With ten vacancies on the varsity roster entering the season, the 1979 Thomas More wrestlers had their work cut out for them.  They proved to be up to the challenge, however, as they went undefeated in conference dual meets to earn the Metro Conference Dual Meet title.  They also won the Metro Conference tournament and their WISAA Regional with 126 and 181 points, respectively.  The team was led by senior Bruce Purdy and junior heavyweight Jeff Boehm, who each went undefeated on the season, capturing Conference, Regional and State championships along the way.  Sophomore Steve Baker and senior Carl Sitzberger also won Conference and Regional championships.  After the team finished tied for fourth at the WISAA State meet, Coach Tom Knitter was pleased with the team’s performance, saying, “We had a young team, but they came through.  I can’t help but be satisfied with this season.”
