St. Thomas More High School is proud to announce that the school has received nearly $20,000 in grants from Catholic Community Foundation and We Energies Foundation to support our Academic Support and College Preparatory Services. These generous grants will allow St. Thomas More to continue providing our students with individualized support to supplement their classroom lessons and help them remain on track for success in college and beyond.
St. Thomas More’s Academic Support and College Preparatory Services include our MORE Enrichment afterschool program, the Academic Resource Center, and the College & Career Center. Open throughout the school day, the Academic Resource Center is staffed by rotating teachers from different academic departments, providing students with supplemental instruction from subject experts. The afterschool extension of the Academic Resource Center, MORE Enrichment offers supplemental instruction in five subjects: math, English, social science, theology, and Spanish. Along with St. Thomas More classroom teachers, undergraduates at the Marquette University College of Education assist students during MORE Enrichment.
“The Academic Resource Center and MORE Enrichment provide our students with more opportunities to meet with their teachers and tutors individually across different subject areas,” explained dean of academics Kevin Dineen. “Students who participate in MORE Enrichment and the Academic Resource Center consistently improve their skills and class performances, thus having a greater positive impact on their academic confidence.”
The College & Career Center provides St. Thomas More students with personalized postsecondary planning throughout their high school career. The Center helps students set academic and professional goals, explore college and career options, navigate college admission applications, study for college entrance exams, and research financial aid. The Center also hosts seminars during students’ Enrichment Period focused on improving soft skills, such as collaboration, time management, critical thinking, and note-taking.
“St. Thomas More offers a college preparatory education that academically prepares its students for success in universities across the world,” dean of college and career advancement Angela Peñaflor said. “College counseling discussions begin freshman year and continue throughout the four years of high school. We believe that each student has a unique personal mission, and we celebrate all college and career pathways.”
The Catholic Community Foundation and We Energies Foundation join the Green Bay Packers Foundation, which awarded St. Thomas More a $6,000 grant in December 2018, as supporters of our Academic Support and College Preparatory Services for the 2019-20 school year.
“Because of the support of grantmakers like the Catholic Community Foundation, the We Energies Foundation, and the Green Bay Packers Foundation, our Academic Support and College Preparatory Services have grown into an incredibly effective and unique resource for our diverse student body,” president Mary McIntosh said. “We thank these foundations for their commitment to the Wisconsin community and hope that their support encourages other donors to give back as well.”
