Packers Foundation Awards Grant to St. Thomas More

St. Thomas More High School is proud to announce that the school has received a $6,000 grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation to support the continued growth of our Academic Support Services. The Packers Foundation awarded grants to 230 Wisconsin nonprofit organizations at a Lambeau Field luncheon on December 5, 2018.

Providing our diverse student body with individualized support that keeps them on track for success in college and beyond, St. Thomas More’s Academic Support Services includes our MORE Enrichment afterschool program, the Academic Resource Center, and the Enrichment Period. Managed by our student services department, these programs offer personalized academic interventions through supplemental, applied instruction; interactive math, reading, grammar, and writing software; and training in soft, 21st Century skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication.

“The Academic Resource Center and MORE Enrichment provide our students with more opportunities to meet with their teachers and tutors individually across different subject areas,” explained dean of academics Kevin Dineen. “Students who participate in MORE Enrichment and the Academic Resource Center consistently improve their skills and class performances, thus having a greater positive impact on their academic confidence.”

Open throughout the school day, the Academic Resource Center is staffed by rotating teachers from different academic departments, providing students with supplemental instruction from subject experts. The afterschool extension of the Academic Resource Center, MORE Enrichment started in 2016 with a focus on math, and the program now offers supplemental instruction in five subjects. Along with St. Thomas More classroom teachers, undergraduates at the Marquette University College of Education also assist students during MORE Enrichment. Part of our new block class schedule, the Enrichment Period provides students with additional time to access support services and participate in seminars to build their collegiate and professional skills, such as note taking, time management, collaboration, and critical thinking.

“Because of the support of grantmakers like the Green Bay Packers Foundation, our Academic Support Services, especially MORE Enrichment, have grown into an incredibly effective and unique resource for our students,” president Mary McIntosh said. “We thank the Packers for their commitment to the Wisconsin community and hope that the team’s support encourages other donors to give back as well.”

“We’re proud to recognize these outstanding recipient organizations, who are all doing incredible work in our communities,” Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy said at the luncheon and in a press release. “As a community-owned team, we are inspired by the efforts of these organizations and the positive impact they have on those that they serve.”

Congratulations to the Cavalier Powerlifting Team! On Saturday, seven Cavaliers competed in a powerlifting meet at Cudahy High School. Five of the seven athletes medaled, and two of those students are going to state!

“Coach Litscher and I are proud of these student athletes for the hard work and dedication to training," said powerlifting coach and STM science teacher Mike Fricke. "Strength training has a unique way of instilling confidence and growth in young men and women, and in the end that is the most important outcome anyone would want of our students at St. Thomas More High School.”

Stay tuned for more updates on our powerlifting team as some of them compete in Germantown in February and then at the state meet in Appleton on March 2 and 3.
