Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Honors STM Teacher and Student

Milwaukee, WI (May 9, 2018): St. Thomas More High School is proud to announce that the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has presented social science chair Kevin Gleeson with the Kohl Teacher Fellowship and senior Jaime Litwin with the Kohl Initiative Scholarship.

The Kohl Teacher Fellowship recognizes teachers who inspire a love of learning in their students, motivate others, and provide meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom. This fellowship awards $6,000 to the winning teacher and a $6,000 matching grant to the teacher’s school.

“Being awarded a Kohl Fellowship is a humbling experience,” Gleeson said. “I am blessed to be surrounded by colleagues who continuously inspire me to improve educative practices in service of our students. I am empowered by an administration that fosters an environment of professional growth and innovation. It is a high privilege to serve our students whose leadership, citizenship and academic achievement support the continued growth of our school community.”

Gleeson is the fifth educator currently teaching at St. Thomas More to earn the Kohl Teacher Fellowship. Last year, Gleeson completed the fellowship program at the University of Wisconsin Center for the Study of the American Constitution and was nominated for the Gilder Lehrman Institute History Teacher of the Year award. This year, Gleeson, who also moderates St. Thomas More’s chapter of the National Honor Society, will join select college professors and high school teachers from across the country to score Advanced Placement exams in U.S. Government & Politics.

Each year, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation awards its $10,000 Initiative Scholarship to 100 graduating high school students in public, religious, and independent schools throughout Wisconsin. The Kohl Initiative Scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated a high level of motivation, shown strong promise for achieving success in college and beyond, and overcome significant personal obstacles or adversity.

After graduating from St. Thomas More this June, Litwin will attend Carroll University in Waukesha and pursue a degree in Elementary Education. Litwin has been a student leader during her four years at St. Thomas More, serving as captain of the Poms team, president of National Honor Society, and student council president. She has displayed a strong commitment to serving others in her community, volunteering her time for St. Thomas More’s Relay for Life and Faith Can Cure Cancer clubs, as well as many nonprofits across Milwaukee.

“There have been very few students in my career that have been more involved than Jaime has over her years at STM,” said director of student services Tim Schultz, who also serves as Litwin’s school counselor. “She is everything that you want in a student leader: compassionate, dependable, trustworthy, loyal, and just an overall good human being.”

Established in 1990 by philanthropist, businessman, and former Wisconsin Senator Herbert H. Kohl, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has awarded $14.5 million to Wisconsin students, teachers, principals, and schools. St. Thomas More thanks Senator Kohl and his foundation for their recognition of our teachers, students, and school community.
