FAFSA Tips from STM’s Dean of College and Career Advancement
To apply for financial aid for college for the 2018-19 school year, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on or after October 1, 2017. In the meantime, you can go to fsaid.ed.gov to create your FSA ID and password. Both parent and student needs their own FSA ID in order to complete the FAFSA.
The FAFSA is a required first step to become eligible for federal student loans or grants. Even if you do not qualify for federal aid, schools will use the results from your FAFSA to determine private scholarships and grants.
While parent information is needed to complete the FAFSA, students can certainly seek and apply for outside scholarships on their own, all year long! Remember never to pay for a scholarship application or search engine—there are many scams that you should avoid.
Each student at STM has an account on Naviance Family Connection, which is an internet-based portal to manage college applications. Posted in the student portal of this website are scholarship opportunities that come through the STM office. Students should especially target the local scholarships in the Milwaukee area. While they may be smaller amounts, they are more accessible and less competitive. Also, always check the college website for internal scholarships that require a separate application—due dates can be early! Some additional recommended websites and scholarship search engines are as follows:
