Looking Back: The Rezutek Family

There is something special about the STM experience. It’s not necessarily easy to define or put into words, but as sure as the sun rises over Lake Michigan, there is something special about those final years of childhood at 2601 East Morgan Avenue.

There is something special about the STM experience. It’s not necessarily easy to define or put into words, but as sure as the sun rises over Lake Michigan, there is something special about those final years of childhood at 2601 East Morgan Avenue.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.” (Turns out that these are not just the “wise” words of ’80s rock band Cinderella.) In 1849, French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote, “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” – the more things change, the more they stay the same. It is a pretty good synopsis of what has taken place in the buildings at KK and Morgan over the last fifty years. The changes? In addition to faces: curriculum, enrollment, and even a name addition…these are just a few examples in our storied history. What is more important, however, is what has stayed the same.

While the wording may have changed, for the last fifty years, the school’s mission has stayed the same: to turn out young men and women of faith to bear witness in a world in need of more witnesses. How do I know? I look at Jacob, STM class of ’24 and my son. Engineer, firefighter, accountant, entrepreneur, electrician…I have no idea what the future holds for him, but I am not worried. Like my classmates and fellow alumni, and like the men and women I had the privilege of calling students in my classroom, I see the mission alive and well in him.

A lot has changed in fifty years. I am thankful that the mission has stayed the same.

Very nicely said Ben. I can't believe you graduated the year I started working there. It was an honor working with your mother.
